Spanish phrase of the week

Echo de menos...

I miss...

A2, elementaryYou can manage short, routine exchanges: shopping, directions, your family and your job, and simple messages.

How to use it

Echar de menos is how people in Spain say they miss someone or something. Only echar changes, and it’s a regular verb like hablar: echo, echas, echa, echamos, echáis, echan.

When you miss a person, put a in front of them: echo de menos a mi madre. When it’s a place or a thing, leave it out: echo de menos el té inglés.

In Latin America you’ll often hear extrañar instead. People in Spain understand it, but echar de menos is what you’ll hear around you.

Examples

  • Echo de menos a mi familia.

    I miss my family.

  • ¿Echas de menos Inglaterra?

    Do you miss England?

  • Te echo de menos.

    I miss you.

Good to know

Don't use perder for this. Perder is for missing a bus or a train (he perdido el autobús), not for missing people or places.
